What Youth

I began writing for What Youth Magazine in 2018 mainly about music, mixology and shows. The publication focuses on surfing, skateboarding, music, photography, travel, culture and general antics of the youth of now. I grew up reading the magazine so it was an honor to join the team.

Some consider it a “guilty pleasure,” the Dude often refers to it as a “Caucasian,” but the simple luxury of a White Russian isn’t lost on anyone who knows what’s good for them. It’s the kind of drink that seems implicitly appropriate at any time of day because of the coffee liqueur and milk…at least that’s what I tell myself.

Hailing from Quebec, it’s hard to understand how TOPS has effortlessly captured the salty, beach-filled summer nostalgia in their music. Until you hear their crisp synth pop rhythms and mellow, hazy, yet perfectly moody vocals. After listening you’ll realize you just got home exhausted from a long day’s work, and next moment it’s like you’re in Biarritz revelling in waves that dreams are made of.

Swedish trio Peter Bjorn and John release their newest album Darker Days today and we’re premiering the video for their single “Living a Dream” right here, right now. Harpsichords, acoustic guitars, and that buttery mid-60’s nonchalance make the record easy to get hip to.

Keep your eyes and ears open for their next album All Inclusive Romantic Getaway which according to the guys, would consist of “three bottles of high grade absinthe, a Barry White deluxe record, and a box of edible underwear.” I can’t wait to see what the next music video has in store, which judging by previous work (directed by the kid from Stranger Things) should be killer.

I’m writing this while listening to the debut album Nothing Feels Natural by D.C. professional badasses Priests, and it’s taking everything in me to not get up and dance like everyone in this cafe isn’t watching. Catchy but complex powerful punk melodies serve as the perfect soundtrack for not giving a shit. Earning recognition from Iggy himself, this album sounds like ditching your day job and having so much fun that you lose track of time.

Here’s a drink to reach for, the official cocktail from New Orleans: the Sazerac. With its ample bitters and sepia spirit, the drink is earthy and deep yet subtly sweet. While it’s served in an ice-cold glass, the unusually warm quality of rye whiskey gives me those fireside holiday vibes.
